Every year, more than 1,800 volunteers generously donate their time, energy, and love to the animals at Animal Humane Society. They not only introduce animals to their new families, but also help with shelter cleaning, assist in training school classes, bathe puppies, socialize shy and fearful animals, prepare materials for spay/neuter surgeries, and so much more.

Michaela started volunteering at AHS as part of our Student Volunteer Experience and was so enthusiastic about the work, she stayed on when the program ended.

What made you want to volunteer at AHS?

I was always fond of animals when I was a child, and would try to “rescue” every spider or insect that I'd come across. I didn’t connect with other kids at my grade school as much as I felt with animals. I was practically counting down the days until I could apply to be a volunteer!

What is your volunteer role at AHS?

I currently do dog adoption support and pick up dog walking shifts when I can.

What is your favorite part of your role?

I really like dog adoption support for many reasons, but the main one being that it is incredibly versatile. I get to do [adoptions] along with laundry, kitchen, socializing other animals, cleaning cages, and helping out staff wherever else possible.

Tell us about your favorite moment volunteering at AHS.

My favorite moments are just being able to tag-team with my co-volunteer, Maggie. Working with her means that we get through so much while enjoying every moment too. She might cover one thing such as talking with a customer while I may be doing something like cleaning up dog waste, or vice-versa.

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering at AHS?

Being able to answer questions and connect with customers on a down-to-earth level is really a great feeling.

What is the most challenging part of volunteering at AHS?

I want to be with this cute puppy, and this old dog, or this lonely pupper, and etc. You just can’t be in all kennels at once. My heart aches because I know each tail-wagging creature deserves the same amount of attention as the next one does.

Have you had a special connection with any of the animals in particular since volunteering at AHS?

Well, yes, actually. This particular dog is sitting right next to my bed right now! I found Willow in the back of the St. Paul shelter after one of my more busy shifts and she was so different from other dogs. I looked at her and her body was still, but her tail wagged ferociously. Her ears perked and then they would pin against the back of her head. She was gentle and attentive. I would reach out my hand to rub her back and before I could even touch her she was on the ground with her belly exposed. Willow is around 2 years old and is a Smooth Collie mix. She does great with my younger siblings and she is, for the most part, obedient. For being a Georgia dog, she sure adores the snow!
