Welcoming a new pet into your home can be so exciting. Your family just grew by one, and together, you have so much to learn! In the first week, you’ll likely start figuring out a routine, building trust, and exploring likes and dislikes. For some pets, the transition is quick and easy. Others may need more time and assistance.
Sometimes things don't work out as planned ― and that's ok! AHS will provide a credit for your full adoption fee if you choose to return your pet within 60 days of your adoption date.
Sixty-day return policy
Animal Humane Society offers a 60-day adjustment period within which you can evaluate the pet’s progress and your adoption decision. If, within those 60 days, you determine your recently adopted pet isn’t a good fit or you find yourself unable to provide necessary medical care, you may return the animal and receive an AHS gift card that can be used toward the adoption of another animal, pet supplies, training classes, and education programs.
If at any time you can no longer care for your adopted pet, you may surrender the animal to AHS. If the 60-day return policy has expired, you will not receive a gift card.
In compliance with the Veterinary Practice Act, if you choose to return the animal you won't be able to readopt him/her at any time.
What if my new pet gets sick?
While AHS can fill many prescription medications at no cost, we cannot reimburse you for any veterinary expenses you may incur after you bring your new pet home. Learn more about post-adoption medical care and ways AHS can help in the event your animal gets sick.
