Animal Humane Society's Buffalo location closed on November 1, 2018.
Moving forward, we will continue to serve Buffalo and surrounding communities through our locations in Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul, and Woodbury. Our Golden Valley site, also located in the west metro, will serve a large portion of those animals, and we will expand capacity for intake and adoption at all four of our sites to ensure that animals in need continue to find refuge at AHS. We are confident that the 2,100 animals cared for in Buffalo each year — roughly 9 percent of our total placements — can be cared for and placed through our four other sites. We will also continue to provide low-cost spay/neuter services in Buffalo through our Kindest Cut mobile clinic.
As a part of our strategic planning process our board of directors and other leaders evaluated each of our five locations and their potential for enhanced service delivery and continued growth. The assessment of our long underutilized Buffalo location found no alternative uses that would work effectively in the context of our larger strategic plan. While difficult, this change positions Animal Humane Society for the future and will ultimately allow us to help even more animals in need.
All of the animals remaining in the Buffalo shelter on November 1 were transferred to one of our other four adoption centers to find homes.

Buffalo area residents may also reach out to Crossroads Animal Shelter or Tri-County Humane Society to explore surrender options.
After November 1, we will restrict access to the property to ensure that animals are not abandoned. Signage on site will direct Buffalo community members to alternative shelters, including other AHS locations, Crossroads Animal Shelter in Buffalo, and Tri-County Humane Society in St. Cloud.
We are also reaching out to recent adopters, service users, and community veterinarians to ensure that they are aware of this change.
Animal Humane Society will continue to support Community Cats in Buffalo.
Our targeted Trap-Neuter-Return program will continue in zip codes 55358, 55363, 55390, 55313, and 55376 through March 2018.
If you live outside of these targeted zip codes, you can still participate in our Community Cats program by trapping and transporting cats to one of our four other Animal Humane Society shelters.
Animal Humane Society owns the buildings occupied by the current Buffalo site, as well as the land those buildings are on. We will continue to evaluate potential options for that property, including the possibility of partnering with other animal welfare organizations to determine the best use of the facility. We will share that information as decisions are made.
