Pet insurance can help you manage the cost of certain injuries or illnesses your newly adopted pet may experience.
New cat and dog adopters receive 30 days of free pet insurance, provided through MetLife. No credit card is required to activate, and the policy will auto-cancel if not renewed. MetLife's offer provides 100% reimbursement up to $500 of coverage for accidents and illnesses after a $50 deductible is met. You may use any licensed veterinarian, emergency clinic, or specialist nationwide — just submit receipts for reimbursement.

We know how stressful it can be when your pet is sick. At Animal Humane Society, we do everything we can to ensure adoptable animals are healthy before leaving our shelters.
Although rare, in some cases (especially with canine respiratory infection, otherwise known as kennel cough), illness can progress rapidly after animals leave the shelter. While AHS can fill many prescription medications, we cannot reimburse you for any veterinary expenses you may incur post-adoption. If you agree to diagnostics or treatment recommended by your veterinarian, or you obtain medications from your veterinarian, it will be at your own expense.
If you cannot afford treatment, you can return the animal within the 60-day adjustment period for an AHS gift card which can be used toward the adoption of a new animal waiting for a home, or other goods and services from AHS.
Take advantage of your free veterinary exam
We recommend establishing a relationship with a veterinarian and scheduling an exam for your new pet shortly after adoption. These local veterinarians offer a free wellness examination within 14-30 days after the adoption date. Call within the first week to schedule your appointment. (Note: Some veterinarians may schedule your free exam up to 30 days after your adoption date based on appointment availability. Confirm with your vet at the time of making the appointment that they’ll honor the free exam within 30 days of adoption.)
If your pet is diagnosed with a new illness, your veterinarian can call or fax a prescription to AHS to be filled.
AHS will fill medications in the first 30 days
Once you take your pet home, you're responsible for their care and medical bills. However, if a new health problem (not noted at the time of adoption) develops within 30 days after adoption, we can fill a prescription from your veterinarian for up to 30 days of oral or topical medication.
Our staff are available to provide medications prescribed by your veterinarian on Tuesdays from 12-8 PM and from 8 AM-4 PM Wednesdays-Sundays; we are closed on Mondays. If you need a prescription outside these hours, please call the Pet Helpline at 952-HELP-PET (952-435-7738).
Keep your new pet separated from other pets
We recommend that you keep your newly adopted pet isolated from other pets until your veterinarian confirms its health. We cannot treat resident pets who have been exposed to illness from your newly adopted pet.
