Ogema's second chance

Ogema

With help from animal lovers like you, Animal Humane Society is able to provide every dog, cat, and critter in our care with the individualized attention they need. From complex medical procedures and specialty surgeries, to ongoing treatment and behavioral rehabilitation, your support ensures animals receive the second chances they deserve.

For animals like Ogema, that can make all the difference.

Ogema outside

Ogema came to AHS from a reservation in northern Minnesota — an area where homeless animals are left to fend for themselves due to over-population and inadequate resources. A painful and infected wound stretched from his shoulder to his hip. He required immediate medical attention.

At just 4 months old, Ogema was rushed to our surgical suite where AHS vets removed dead tissue and began treating the infected wound. It was the first of many surgical procedures the growing puppy would endure over the next seven weeks while his body slowly healed.

We’ll never know for sure what caused Ogema’s wound, but our vets suspected that the young shepherd mix had been caught underneath the hot tailpipe of a car. In addition to the painful burn, Ogema also had fleas and tested positive for demodex mange, a skin mite that can cause intense itching and skin irritation.

Despite all this, he was a happy, wiggly dog, ready to give wet puppy kisses to anyone who stopped to say hi. The wag of his tail was so enthusiastic, his whole body moved.

Ogema with a volunteer

As we cared for Ogema, we fell in love with his unbreakable spirit. Despite his rough start in life, the wiggly puppy never stopped wagging his tail. With each playful bark and puppy kiss, Ogema taught us the true meaning of resiliency.

After weeks of intensive care, Ogema’s body had healed and he was ready to find a loving of home of his own. He won the hearts of a family visiting our adoption center the next day. In a few months, no one will be able to tell that Ogema had once been critically injured.

But we’ll never forget how your love transformed him.
