In early January, Animal Humane Society came to the aid of 47 dogs, including 24 puppies, living in a hog barn in rural Carver County. The owner had been evicted from the property and refused to move his dogs, leaving them with nowhere to go and no one to care for them.
Our humane investigations team took action and brought them to our Golden Valley shelter where our staff provided the dogs with the individualized care they needed to prepare for adoption. So far, 28 of the dogs have been placed in homes and six are currently available for adoption. Additionally, three puppies died as the result of failure to thrive and the remaining 10 dogs are receiving treatments or are in foster care preparing for adoption.

In early December, 80 rabbits and guinea pigs were surrendered to AHS following a humane investigation in which the animals were discoverd living in filthy travel carriers in a tarped carport, without heat or proper ventilation. While the rabbits were treated and made their way to our adoption centers, the guinea pigs went home with foster volunteers for several weeks to determine if they were pregnant. Several baby guinea pigs have been born since, including Rita, born on Christmas Eve. Rita and her mother spent a few more weeks in foster care before being adopted in mid-January. Rita’s new owner was so excited that he actually broke a shoelace in his rush to meet her! |
