This month is going to the dogs!

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month and while we are devoted to finding happy homes for dogs all year long, we’re hoping you’ll go the extra mile this month to help us do even more. Here are a few ways you can make second chances possible for the dogs in our care:

Open your home to a new canine companion: There are so many happy, healthy dogs in shelters that can’t wait to meet their new families. At any given time, we have approximately 100 dogs available at our adoption centers – all different breeds, ages, and personality types. Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers can help you choose the one that’s right for you!

Make a gift to sponsor an animal’s care: If you’ve fallen in love with an animal in our care but can’t adopt, you can still help by sponsoring an animal! Your donation will help support the cost of shelter, vaccinations, and medical care for all the animals preparing for and awaiting adoption. Every donation, large or small, helps more animals find loving new homes.

Spread the word: Tweet, Facebook, or Instagram a photo of your shelter dog, or share the adoptable animals we post, to encourage your friends and family to choose adoption when looking for a new pet. You can also tell us your Animal Humane Society adoption story and we might even share it on our Happy Tails Tumblr. Every mention makes a difference!

Volunteer with shelter dogs: Think of how much you can do with just your spare time! Volunteers bring joy to dogs awaiting adoption at AHS by walking them, playing with them, and giving them one-on-one attention. Or perhaps you can provide a temporary home by fostering a dog with special challenges until they are ready for a more permanent home.

A show of hands for Stevie

Before adopting a pet, many people ask a friend or family member to weigh in on whether or not it’s the right decision. When Alex received a text message from his wife Laura who was visiting with a dog at AHS, he happened to be in the middle of teaching a classroom full of 9th graders. He looked at the photo and message on his phone, and turned to his students for the final approval. Should he and Laura adopt the adorable little 14-pound Corgi/Australian Cattle Dog mix puppy? We’re pretty sure you can guess what they said.

This story time series for children ages 2-4 and their caregivers features a picture storybook read aloud by one of our humane educators, followed by a craft and special time with an animal. There is no fee for this program but reservations must be made by calling 763-432-2221.
