Pet Dish! The latest scoop from Animal Humane Society

Finding joy, one envelope at a time

To express the gratitude we feel for our supporters every day, we want to share these words from an AHS employee who finds endless joy in opening Animal Humane Society’s mail during the holiday season:

For the last two years I’ve had the honor of working at AHS, where I am fortunate to spend my days sharing my love of our organization with new and long-standing AHS supporters. Every day I get to hear stories of the impact animals have on people and how they can’t imagine their lives without their furry friend from AHS.

During the holiday season, I’m the first one to jump at opening the mail. You might think it’s because I love seeing all the donations that arrive to help the animals in our shelters. But what really excites me is discovering who each supporter is, what inspired them to give, and seeing how many people have opened their hearts and homes to animals. Along with seeing the donations, I get to read personal notes that are included, or marvel at artwork provided by a child. So many families are completed by adopting a new family pet, and that joy is shared with AHS in each envelope we open. Who knew opening mail could be so fulfilling!

From all of us at Animal Humane Society, thank you.

Training tip: Fun activities for indoor play

There's no doubt about it... winter is upon us! In addition to making sure your pets stay safe in the freezing temperatures, it’s important to find indoor activities to keep them busy and entertained when it’s too cold to play outside. Our Training School has a few simple and fun games to exercise your dog’s mind, inspired by our Nose Knows scent class.

A look back on Rita’s first year

Rita the guinea pig was born on Christmas Eve 2015. Her pregnant mother had been surrendered along with 80 other rabbits and guinea pigs following a humane investigation, and gave birth shortly after arriving at AHS. Rita spent a few weeks in foster care before being adopted last January. We’ve been fortunate to hear from Rita’s new caregiver a few times over the past year, and the latest update warmed our hearts over the holidays. One-year-old Rita continues to thrive in her amazing home — see for yourself!
