From shelter dog to service dog

In the latest edition of Animal Tracks, we highlighted former Animal Humane Society pets now working in the community. Three more animals recently joined the working-pet ranks.

Darla, Lila, and Pepper were among 17 service dogs who graduated from Can Do Canines last month. The New Hope-based organization trains assistance dogs to help people with disabilities, scouting rescues like AHS for potential candidates whenever possible. The June graduation ceremony had the most shelter dogs in any one graduating class in Can Do Canine’s history.

Update on dogs seized from WI puppy mill

A Wisconsin court has awarded custody of the 69 dogs in the Pierce County humane investigations case — including 25 puppies born at Animal Humane Society — to Pierce County.

AHS took in the dogs this April after they were seized from an unlicensed breeding facility. They had spent their entire lives in dirty, cramped cages without proper food or water.

For several months we have cared for the dogs, providing them with clean, comfortable housing while waiting for the legal process to unfold. In the initial trial, the breeding facility owner was ordered to pay nearly $90,000 to cover the cost of their care. However, officials acknowledge that there is little hope of collecting on that judgement.

AHS will continue to care for the dogs until prosecutors determine whether or not they will be needed as evidence in the criminal trial of the breeding facility owner. We will provide updates to this case on our website as additional details become available.
