The Walk for Animals is this weekend!

Get your wag on!

Purina VCA

We can feel the excitement building… the Walk for Animals is just four days away! This Saturday, thousands of animal lovers and their pets will get their wag on at our Golden Valley location to help animals in need right here in our community. If you haven’t already registered for the Walk, it’s not too late!

We’ve been working diligently to put together what we hope is the best Walk yet, with plenty of activities, live music, food trucks, vendors, and entertainment for all ages (and species!). Visit our Walk website for the most up-to-date information on everything you need to know about Walk Day.

Not only is the Walk a great time for humans and animals alike, it is also crucial to providing nurturing care for the 23,000 animals that come through our shelters each year. If you can’t make it on Saturday, you can still support the Walk by making a donation today.

We hope to see you there!

Get your wag on!

Watch us on TV this week

Animal Humane Society is coming into your living room tomorrow! Well, not exactly. WCCO–TV is partnering with us to raise funds for animals in need as part of the Walk for Animals. We’ll be sharing extraordinary stories throughout the day on-air, so tune in to see how your support can make a tremendous impact on animals right here in our community.

AHS assists with the seizure of 48 dogs from Wisconsin puppy mill

In late April, Animal Humane Society and the ASPCA assisted the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office with the rescue of 48 Labrador Retrievers — 35 adults and 13 puppies — living in unsanitary conditions at a suspected puppy mill in Pierce County, WI. Multiple dogs were being kept together in filthy travel crates without access to food or water. Their owner was arrested on charges of mistreatment of animals.

Now safe at AHS, the animals are receiving urgent medical treatment and loving care until a Wisconsin court determines their custody. We will provide updates on this case on our website as additional details become available.

50,000 surgeries and counting

In May 2011, Animal Humane Society set out to reduce the staggering number of unwanted animals in our community by partnering with Kindest Cut veterinary clinic to provide low-cost, high-quality spay and neuter services. Kindest Cut offers these surgeries, along with wellness services and dental care, to pets of people with limited means and to nonprofit rescues and shelters.

Last month, Kindest Cut reached an exciting milestone, performing its 50,000th spay/neuter surgery. These efforts have no doubt made a huge impact on the lives of animals in our community and prevented countless unwanted litters that often result in homeless animals.

Walking the Walk for four decades

Walking the Walk for four decadesWhen Jan and Nils Anderson moved to Minnesota, they expanded their family by adopting a Doberman from AHS. Having been around animals their whole lives and experiencing the joy that pets bring, they felt compelled to give back.

Jan and Nils participated in their first Walk for Animals in 1976 and haven’t missed a Walk since. This year they’re working toward a goal of raising $40,000 in honor of their 40th Walk for Animals. So how do they do it? They say it’s as simple as “ask, and ask, and ask again!”

We’d like to extend a very special thanks to Jan and Nils for their inspiring 40 years of fundraising. Join them this Saturday at the Walk for Animals!
