Months-long investigation gives fresh start to dogs like Gideon

Gideon is one of nearly 100 dogs settling into new, loving homes following a 7-month humane investigation case. In August 2015, our humane agents received a report of a large number of dogs living in unsanitary conditions north of the metro. As the investigation progressed over the next several months, the dogs’ owners moved them to multiple properties. In late February and early March, agents were able to locate the couple and work with them to remove 95 dogs from properties in Sandstone and Maplewood.

So far, 93 dogs from this case have been placed in new homes. One dog was humanely euthanized due to complications from an untreatable birth defect. And the last remaining dog gave birth while in our care and will be available once she and her puppies are ready for adoption.

We recently heard from Gideon’s new family and he’s doing great! He’s even looking forward to attending his first Walk for Animals this May.

Real heroes don’t wear capes…

They wear AHS volunteer aprons! It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week and we are celebrating the 2,400 special individuals that give back to the animals at our five locations. Our heroic volunteers contributed more than 163,000 hours and endless dog and cat snuggles last year alone.

Volunteers work hard to make sure the animals in our care and the people who visit our shelters receive the best support. From assisting customers in choosing a pet, to helping shy/fearful animals get ready for adoption, to fostering animals in their homes, our volunteers do it all.

Take a chance on Nikko

Nikko

Nikko's story

Volunteers make a difference every day at Animal Humane Society. Not just for the animals they care for, but for the people they help as well.

A family mourning the loss of their dog visited AHS’s Coon Rapids location to see if it was the right time to bring a new dog into their home. They worked with a volunteer to meet the adult dogs available for adoption, but none of them felt like quite the right fit.

Before leaving, the volunteer asked if they were willing to consider adopting a puppy. They had already ruled out the option of getting a young dog, but reluctantly agreed to meet with a pit bull puppy selected by the volunteer. It didn’t take long for them to realize that he was exactly what they needed.

Unique summer volunteer experience for high school students

Calling all animal-loving teens! We have a special program open to high school students entering grades 10-12 and recent high school graduates who want to volunteer with Animal Humane Society over the summer.

We’re looking for enthusiastic and motivated volunteers to participate in our Summer Animal Volunteer Experience program. S.A.V.E volunteers cover a variety of volunteer shifts, assisting customers interested in adopting and ensuring our animals receive excellent care and socialization as they await new homes. Apply online for positions at all five AHS locations.
