Animal Humane Society helps distribute over 35,000 pounds of pet food to families impacted by COVID-19

AHS partnered with local organization to distribute pet food donations

Animal Humane Society recently received a donation of 41 pallets (almost 36,000 pounds) of dry and wet cat and dog food from GreaterGood.org in partnership with Tiki Pets. In an effort to share this generous donation with the community as quickly as possible, we partnered with several local organizations, including Second Harvest Heartland, to distribute the food to families across Minnesota who need help feeding their pets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With so many community members dealing with the impacts of COVID-19, this donation helps provide support and peace of mind for pet parents in need ― and it’s just one of the ways AHS is giving back during the pandemic.

Additional ways we're serving the community

AHS donates PPE to the Salvation Army to distribute to local hospitals

In late March, AHS donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) ― including masks, gloves, gowns, and face shields ― to the Salvation Army to distribute to local hospitals preparing for an influx of patients with COVID-19. We were able to donate these critical supplies to help support healthcare workers due to a temporary halt on all elective veterinary surgeries during the crisis.

In addition, though AHS shelters have been temporarily closed to the public, we’ve continued to care for hundreds of animals, provide low-cost veterinary services to families facing financial hardship, and service the community through our Pet Helpline.

Bringing more AHS services back online

We’re so grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received from animal lovers during this difficult time. In turn, we’re honored to continue serving and helping animals and the people who love them. In addition to adoption by appointment, AHS is once again providing spay/neuter surgery through our Golden Valley clinic, end-of-life services and curbside surrender appointments, and online and in-person expert training.

Over the coming weeks, AHS will be working to safely bring other critical services back to our community and reopen our four shelters.
