Behavior and training class descriptions

A yellow lab attends a training class at AHS

Animal Humane Society’s behavior and training classes are flexible, pet-oriented, and family friendly. We encourage full participation by all family members, including children. Our experienced, professional trainers will teach you real-life skills you can use with your pet.

Each week, we offer more than 100 classes at our Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, and Woodbury shelters and at Now Boarding near the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport. Please feel free to observe our classes without your pet.

Puppy Kindergarten and Playgroups

Puppies less than 18 weeks old will play with other puppies, meet new people, learn all kinds of new skills, and develop confidence in new situations.

Obedience Courses, Levels 1–5

Completing obedience courses levels 1–5 will give you practical skills for training your dog to be a well-mannered member of your household.

Specialty Workshops

Specialty classes include training for more specific skills, like scent detection, reactivity, and tricks. Workshops focusing on recalls ("come"), loose-leash walking, and more are also available.

Therapy Dogs

Our Therapy Dogs class covers common animal-assisted therapy scenarios and will set you and your dog up for success in a public setting.

Canine Good Citizen Test

The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen test (CGC) is a certification program that evaluates dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere.

Private Training

We're unable to schedule private training sessions at this time. However, we're excited to reintroduce private sessions back into our curriculum at a later date.
