Adoption by appointment FAQs

Why is Animal Humane Society doing adoptions by appointment only?

Our adoption centers are currently closed to the public due to COVID-19. We're introducing this temporary process to help animals in our care find homes while keeping staff and adopters safe.

Why are there so few appointments available?

Demand for adoption appointments is extremely high. Since May we’ve been receiving more 8,000 adoption requests each week, and we’re doing our best to keep up with that demand and create an adoption by appointment process that is fair, easy to use, and sustainable.

We are currently offering 60 adoption appointments each day across all three sites. The number of adoptions we can accommodate in one day is limited by the space necessary for safe physical distancing in our sites.

New appointments become available overnight every night on a three-day advance schedule. Appointments for Saturday become available early Wednesday morning, appointments for Sunday become available early Thursday morning, and so on.

Adoption appointments fill up fast. If the scheduling software shows no appointments available at your preferred site, please check back tomorrow or consider an appointment at one of our other locations.

We appreciate your patience as we deal with this unprecedented demand.

Can I make an appointment to visit with a specific animal?

The availability of individual animals may change on short notice, so we cannot schedule appointments with specific animals in advance. Our staff and volunteers will be happy to help you find the right match among the animals available during your visit.

Unfortunately we are unable to place animals on hold at any point during the adoption by appointment process.

Can you move an animal from another site for my visit?

No. The availability of individual animals may change on short notice, so we cannot schedule appointments with specific animals or move animals from site to site.

We are happy to help you find the right match during your visit. You can preview the animals available for adoption before your appointment. Our adoption listings are updated throughout every day as animals are added and adopted.

Can I place an animal on hold?

Unfortunately we are unable to place animals on hold at any point during the adoption by appointment process.

How do I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

You can log into our scheduling software to cancel or reschedule your appointment online.

What COVID-19 safety measures are in place at AHS?

Animal Humane Society is committed to the health and well-being of the community we serve. To help protect one another, we require face coverings, physical distancing, and a brief health screening for all staff, volunteers, and visitors. We've also updated our cleaning protocols in accordance with state and federal guidance.

Could I contract COVID-19 from my new pet?

There is no evidence to date that pets can spread COVID-19.
