Animal Humane Society position on training methods

Animal Humane Society believes in the use of humane training methods that are based on an understanding of how animals learn. Reward-based, positive reinforcement training methods are highly successful in shaping desired behaviors. Ignoring or redirecting undesired behavior is an effective and humane way to modify behavior and achieve training goals.

We believe in reward-based training programs that focus on teaching pet parents positive methods for training their pet. This not only reduces the number of surrenders due to behavior challenges but also increases the bond between the caregiver and their companion animal. We believe in engaging the whole family, including adults and children, in an animal’s training.
