Walk For Animals Home

Do I have to raise money to attend the Walk?

The Walk is a fundraiser for the Animal Humane Society. We depend on the proceeds of the Walk to care for the nearly 40,000 animals that will come through our doors this year. We ask that you do raise money in order to attend the Walk. You can also make a personal donation to AHS.

Is there a minimum fundraising requirement to come to the Walk?

There isn’t a minimum, but $25 is suggested. If you do not raise money, a personal donation is suggested.

Can I raise money offline (checks and cash) if I sign up online?

Yes! You can raise money through the webpage, and also receive cash/checks as well.  You can record these donations in the participant center or hold onto them until the day of the Walk.

When is the last day to raise money online?

We will award your Walk incentive prizes based on the amount of money you’ve raised as of Walk day, Saturday, May 2. However, the website will still be open for 60 days after the Walk, in the event more people would like to make a donation.

How can I include monies raised off-line on my website total?

All monies you raised, on-line and off-line, will count towards to your overall total and premiums. One of the new features available this year is the ability to record the cash or check donations you've received offline. Simply record your offline donation and send in the funds you raised with a coversheet. Once we receive your offline donations we will confirm them in your account and they will appear on your personal walk page. To ensure your gifts are confirmed before the walk, mail all offline donations by April 18, 2009. Please hold on to any donations you receive after that date and bring them with you to registration.

Why isn’t a gift showing on my online fundraising page?

The main reason the gift is not showing is because the person who made the gift on-line did not complete the on-line gift process. Questions to ask yourself are: Did you receive an email gift notification? Did the donor receive an email thank you for gift made? If the answer is “no”, then the gift was not completed – there are 3 steps to making the gift – make sure the donor scrolls down to the bottom of each page when making their gift.

Are you part of a team and a gift made by a donor was meant for you but only shows on the team page/total? This means your donor made the gift to the team rather than to you specifically.

Yes! We have many people who attend the Walk and leave their pets at home. If you don’t have a pet, or you feel the Walk may be stressful for your pet, please leave your pet at home.

Can I take a shelter dog on the Walk instead of my own pet?

No. We don’t want to create additional stress for our shelter animals and want them to be available to our customers for adoption.

I’m thinking about bringing my horse/donkey/other large animal. What do I need to know beforehand?

Your large animal is welcome at the Walk. However, it may be difficult to park your trailer. If you do plan on bringing a large animal, you’ll need to arrive by 7:30 am to find a nearby space to park. You can park your trailer at the Winmark lot (next door to AHS), in the back of the lot near the railroad tracks. If you bring a large animal, you are responsible for cleaning up after them. Bring another person to follow behind on “poop duty”.

Can I drop my child off to do the walk with our dog?

Where did the East Walk in St. Paul go?

For those walkers who walked around Como Lake in the past, you will notice we are no longer offering this location. We want to thank you for your past support of the Walk for Animals, and for your understanding of our decision to have the event in one location to maximize our resources and our efforts on behalf of animals that rely on us for assistance.  Our success is thanks to you and your hard work! We hope you will join us in Golden Valley, and here’s some helpful information to guide your way:

•    Early Registration:  if you’ve raised $100 or more, you can register early on Thursday, April 30th from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at our St. Paul location at 1115 Beulah Lane. Collect your premiums in advance to wear on walk day, and no standing in lines!

For Saturday, May 2nd:

•    Driving: We’re closer than you may think! From Como Park to the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley location is 13 miles and only a 20 minute drive.  The most direct route from St. Paul is on 94W to exit 230 (the Highway 55/Olson Memorial Hwy exit right after the exit for 394).  Once at Hwy 55 take a left at the light onto Hwy55.  Follow 55 for 3 miles until you reach Meadow Lane, the street the Golden Valley shelter is on.  You will see police directing traffic, as well as informational signs for off-site parking for the event.
•    Parking & Buses: We have plenty of parking lots reserved for the day of the Walk, and most are off of Hwy 55E with clear signage, with free shuttle bus service every 15 minutes starting at 8:00 a.m. until the end of the event and all walkers are returned to their vehicles (around 3pm). From these lots, the buses drop off/pick up just steps from our Golden Valley facility, and pets are welcome, of course! Please just remember to keep all critters under control and dogs on a short lead. More detailed parking information is in the enclosed brochure, or simply call us at (763)432-4841 if you have questions.
•    Start & End Times: Registration will be open from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. with the actual walk through Theodore Wirth Park beginning at 10:30 a.m. However, many walkers come and walk throughout the morning and early afternoon on their own, and then stay to enjoy the many vendors and games we have until 2:00 p.m.
•    Walk Route:  The actual Walk begins at the Animal Humane Society’s Golden Valley campus, then takes you through beautiful Theodore Wirth Park and turns around and heads back to the Animal Humane Society. The walk is approximately 5 miles, but you can turn around at any point to shorten the Walk for either you, or your pets’ needs.

Not able to attend the Walk but still wish to raise money? Not a problem! You can certainly still raise money and simply send in your donations to:  Walk for Animals, 845 Meadow Lane North, Golden Valley, MN  55422.

How many people make up a team?

2 or more people make up a team.

How many different types of teams are there?

There are 3 team types:  Friends/Family Team, Corporate Team, and Vet Teams.

Where do teams register on Walk Day?

All Teams - Corporate, Vet and Friends & Family teams will be directed to register in the new Team Tent (east side of building) where you will fill out your registration forms, turn in your pledges and collect your premiums.

How are the premiums distributed to me if I’m part of a team?

You will receive premiums based upon what you raised as an individual at the time you register, even though you are part of a team.

When giving out premiums, who gets the credit for donations that were made to the Team and not an individual walker?

Your team captain will need to determine where to direct those funds at the time of registration.  They can either be added to an individual walker's registration or pooled together to receive premiums as a team (see below).

What if I am part of a team and we’d like to receive premiums based on what we raised together?

Your team can choose to collect the premiums through the level the team has earned together and divide the items amongst yourselves.  With the help of an AHS staff member or volunteer you may also configure an appropriate distribution of your total team’s funds raised vs. the number of team members, for possible premium options. We are not able to provide more premium items to team members than reflects monies raised by your team, but will work within your team total and number of members to find an equitable disbursement.  We ask that all members of the team wishing to pool funds together arrive to registration at the same time.

Examples:
A team raises $500 and there are 2 people on the team: The team can collect a full set of premiums at the $500 level (1 bandana, 1 t-shirt, 1 bag recycler/tote bag & 1 sweatshirt), or, the total can be divided to the $250 level and each member receives a bandana, t-shirt and 1 bag recycler/tote bag.

A team raises $500 and there are 4 people on the team:  The team can collect a full set of premiums at the $500 level (1 bandana, 1 t-shirt, 1 bag recycler/tote bag and 1 sweatshirt), or, the total can be divided by 4 at $125 and each member receives a set of premiums at the $100 level (bandana and t-shirt)

A team of 20 raise $500: The team can collect a full set of premiums (1 bandana, 1 t-shirt, 1 bag recycler/tote bag & 1 sweatshirt), but as $500 divided by 20 is $25 and that is not a premium level, some equitable solution could be negotiated, possibly 10 bandana’s at the $50 level, which may mean not all team members will receive something.

A team of 3 raise $750:  The team can collect a full set of premiums at the $750 level (1 bandana, 1 t-shirt, 1 bag recycler/tote bag &1 sweatshirt).

A team of 7 raise $1,000: The team could receive a fullest of premiums (1 bandana, 1 t-shirt, 1 bag recycler/tote bag, 1 sweatshirt & 1 picnic backpack), or, 7 sets of premiums at the $100 level (7 bandanas & 7 t-shirts).
