Volunteer opportunities for youth

You must be 16 years or older to volunteer at Animal Humane Society sites or events. Many of the animals that come to us have unknown histories. All people working at our shelters need to be able to manage unpredictable situations. In order to ensure the safety of the animals, staff and volunteers, the Animal Humane Society has determined that generally youth under the age of 16 are not appropriate for volunteering with the organization.

We understand that most youth have varying maturity levels. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to appropriately assess these differences and thus our policy is to limit our volunteer program to those 16 years of age or older.

We are eager to engage youth in animal welfare issues and the work of the Animal Humane Society in ways other than on-site volunteering. The Animal Humane Society has many educational programs to explore, including our PetSet Youth Club, through which younger community members can gain an understanding of the Animal Humane Society and animal welfare issues.

There are also opportunities to contribute to the work of the Animal Humane Society off-site. Young people might also consider having a parent apply to be a foster volunteer. Although the primary volunteer must be age 18 or older, the entire family can participate in the fostering experience.
