Our new dog, Zeke, was not necessarily a planned addition to the family. We had considered getting a second dog as our first dog, Riley, a 5-year-old yellow Lab, loves to play with other dogs and was always a little sad when we would have to leave her in the home alone. However, discussing this as a family was not something that we had done before I walked into the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society. It was something that we considered but hadn't committed to, as we weren't sure if we were all ready for the extra care that was needed for a second dog. Well, like most things in life, adopting Zeke may not have been planned by us, but it certainly was 'The Plan,' as once we saw Zeke on the website, then spent time with him at the shelter, it was extremely clear that this dog was meant to be a part of our family.
Zeke is a 3-year-old male springer spaniel/yellow Lab mix. When we met Zeke, he had already been in the shelter for almost a month, which surprised us as he is one of the most handsome and sweetest dogs that we have ever met. It could have been because he was 3 years old, 60 pounds and his previous owners had to give him up because he was soiling their house instead of going outside for his bathroom needs. Given these factors, he may have not been considered the ideal choice for most families. However, we looked at this sweet handsome
dog, his age, weight and toilet training issue and didn't even hesitate. We were looking for a companion for our beautiful lab, Riley, and we knew Riley would lead by example regarding where and when it was time to go potty at this new home.
The first day that we brought him home he started out a little timid, but didn't want any of us to be too far away from him. He would go from room to room every 15 minutes or so to check on all of us, almost as if he didn't want to lose what he had just acquired - a loving family, a new dog friend, food in his bowl twice a day, a big yard to play in, and a really warm cozy bed to sleep in.
Zeke has been with us for 3 months now and each day he is with us we fall more in love with him. He has added so much fun to our home, and our home was pretty fun before he arrived! We can't imagine not having him in our lives. He's such a good boy!
