Animal Humane Society position on open admission and euthanasia

The Animal Humane Society believes in an open admission philosophy, which means we accept every animal regardless of health, age, breed or temperament. Open admission is essential to providing shelter and care to the thousands of animals that would otherwise have no safe refuge.

The Animal Humane Society is committed to reducing euthanasia – doing so is central to our values and achieving our mission. We believe every animal deserves an opportunity. Our goal is to serve animals throughout their lives. Our programs focus on ending homelessness and addressing the immediate and long-term needs of the animals that we serve. We strive to do the greatest good, given limited resources, to help the greatest number of animals. In balancing the welfare of the animals with our responsibility to the public we recognize that not all animals are suitable for placement. When the difficult decision is made to end an animal’s life, we believe that compassionate euthanasia by injection is the most humane and dignified method.

The Animal Humane Society believes there is a place for a variety of philosophies that address the animal homelessness problem in Minnesota and nationally. We are respectful of the limited admission concept, but believe that open admission services are needed and have a valuable role to play in the scope of animal welfare services that are provided in our community.

The Board and staff at the Animal Humane Society are committed to the open admission philosophy, responsibly using our resources to help the most animals and finding alternatives to euthanasia. We are supportive of a respectful environment that encourages varying viewpoints and approaches to solving a problem that is pervasive. Working cooperatively with all groups, regardless of philosophy, we’ve set our sights on a future where every placeable animal is given a life-long home.
