The PetSet Youth Club is perfect for youth grades 5-8 or 9-12 who want to learn about animal welfare issues while developing volunteering and community service skills.
The PetSet is a service learning program. This enhanced form of community service ensures that youth play an active role in choosing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the work they do for their communities.
A fun, comprehensive program that meets twice a month, PetSet activities are focused on these areas:
Learning: Gaining new understanding through discussion with animal experts, researching issues, and sharing with other members
Community Service: Creating member-led projects that benefit animals in our communities
Advocacy & Public Education: Building public awareness and learning about how the legislative process can impact animals
Volunteer Skills Training:* Developing volunteer abilities that can apply to AHS or other volunteer opportunities
*Membership in the Pet Set does not guarantee that a student will be eligible to serve as an AHS volunteer. All students must follow the standard volunteer application process. Successful applicants may volunteer with a parent at age 14, or on their own at age 16.
Members may join the PetSet throughout the semester. These members can pay a pro-rated membership fee for the remaining meetings.
Please note: The PetSet is not a “junior volunteer” program. While some animal time will be included in most club meetings, participants should not expect to spend significant time with animals waiting for adoption. Animal time may also include meeting and learning about non-shelter animals, such as service dogs or therapy animals. View a sample of PetSet activities to see more of what this group can do!
