40th anniversary Walk for Animals is Saturday, May 3, 2014

This year we are planning an extra special celebration for the 40th anniversary of the Walk for Animals - 40 years of celebrating the animals in our lives and giving back to those that need our help.

We hope you’ll join us and thousands of other animal lovers in Golden Valley on Saturday, May 3. Just one click and you’re on your way to raising pledges, making a gift to a friend, family member or colleague, or volunteering for the largest human/pet walk in the Upper Midwest.

This year, a more user-friendly website is up and running earlier than ever before to help you begin raising pledges! Check the site frequently for updates.

We also have some awesome prizes that will be announced soon on the website. And this year we’ve added a special $40 prize level to commemorate our 40th!

On Walk day, our special band is Boogie Wonderland, there will be more food trucks than ever before, and we’ve shortened the Walk for the first time (three miles instead of five).

We’re looking forward to seeing you on May 3!

Our Walk for Animals is huge, and we need you!

It takes nearly 400 volunteers working alongside Animal Humane Society staff to put on the annual Walk for Animals. And as this is our 40th anniversary year, we’re betting this walk will be huge!

In addition to having fun and getting that warm-fuzzy feeling from helping a great cause, volunteers will also receive a 2014 Walk for Animals T-shirt!

Here are just some of the ways you can help us at the Walk: walker check-in, games and activities, traffic and crowd control, assistance on the Walk route, and pre-event tasks.

If you have not registered already, we encourage you to apply online by visiting our website. Please encourage friends and family to volunteer as well! Volunteers for the Walk must be 16 years of age or older. Some roles require volunteers to be 18 or older.

Assignment confirmations will follow as we get closer to the event.

More details about the Walk for Animals can be found at our website. The Walk for Animals is our largest fundraiser; we are grateful for your donation of time in support of AHS and are eager to facilitate a fun and exciting volunteer experience for you!

Animal House wants to pamper your pooch

Animal House, Animal Humane Society’s pet boarding facility in Golden Valley, is offering a new package to keep your pooch in supreme comfort! Our new Pampered Pooch Package provides your dog with a one-on-one 15-minute walk in nearby Wirth Park and also a delicious peanut butter-treat filled Kong to keep his or her tail wagging while you’re away. For only $10, your four-legged friend will thank you! Visit the website or call (763) 489-2222 for information.

Bottle Babies foster volunteers needed

Animal Humane Society is looking for volunteers to support our Bottle Babies kitten foster program this season. Volunteers care for litters of kittens starting at two to four weeks of age that need extra special care. These kittens are too young for solid foods and need to be bottle fed, cleaned and pottied about every three to four hours until they are weaned to solid foods.

AHS provides volunteers with training, support and your own supply kit for each litter you foster. Volunteers can choose to foster Bottle Babies until they are weaned, a two-to- three week time commitment, or until they are ready for adoption, which takes about six or seven weeks.

This role is open to any active volunteer at least 18 years of age, and no previous foster experience required. If you are interested in more information about this opportunity or would like to RSVP for one of the training sessions below, please email Kelly Anderson, foster coordinator, at kanderson@animalhumanesociety.org. Registration is open until March 31.

A spring break camp not to be missed

This year’s Spring Break camp at Animal Humane Society has a new wrinkle that is sure to leave standing room only. AHS has partnered with Stages Theatre Company for a week-long camp, March 31 – April 4, for grades 3-6. Campers will participate in animal-themed games and crafts, have special animal time with shelter pets, and produce and perform a play at the end of the week. Register now to secure your child’s spot!

Registration open for summer camps, but space going fast

Unleashed is an animal-themed summer day camp at Animal Humane Society. Unleashed campers entering grades 3-10 spend a full week immersed in animal learning and fun. Camp sessions are held at all five AHS locations. Space is limited, and many sessions fill up quickly. Register early to guarantee your child's space at Unleashed Summer Camp - where "acting like an animal" is a good thing!

Whisker Whirl was fabulous!

Thank you to our Whisker Whirl sponsors: GLS, Subaru, Evans Larson, and Mpls/St Paul Magazine for an amazing gala! Click here to view photos from this fabulous evening.

Scratching Posts

If it’s March, it must be Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month, a designation from the ASPCA to encourage guinea pig adoption from animal rescue shelters. Thousands of guinea pigs are surrendered to shelters each year, and these little furry pets need loving homes. Is a guinea pig the right pet for you?

Did you know that AHS offers badge programs for Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors? Our comprehensive programs feature a shelter tour and other activities that meet all the requirements to earn the respective badges.
