Tweeting for help -- nearly 300 birds in need of new homes

Recent voluntary surrenders of birds have left Animal Humane Society with hundreds of cockatiels, parakeets, and finches in need of homes. In an effort to encourage the public to adopt a bird, Animal Humane Society is offering a special bird promotion for the next few days: sing or whistle a few lines of a bird-themed song or give us your best bird call and you can adopt a fine-feathered friend for just $1.00. It's tweeting that really matters!

On Wednesday, August 18, a team from Animal Humane Society transported 234 cockatiels and parakeets from a home in the Brainerd area where they were being properly cared for but the owners could no longer handle them on their own. At Animal Humane Society they were examined, tested for disease, and prepared for adoption.

An additional 21 finches were surrendered to Animal Humane Society last weekend by a different owner.

A total of 279 birds are now available for adoption at Animal Humane Society’s five locations in Buffalo, Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, St. Paul, and Woodbury.

Birds can make wonderful pets. They don’t require long walks or housetraining, need minimal grooming, they are intelligent and can be trained, and are attractive, social, and long-lived companions. Please help us get the word out and find hundreds of birds new homes!

UPDATE: Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community, we successfully adopted out all the birds from this promotion. We are so pleased with the wonderful response we received and the amount of people who opened up their homes to a new feathered friend. If you're still interested in adopting a bird or any other pet, check our website for adoptable animals updated in real time.
