This June, a Good Samaritan entered an abandoned home near the Leech Lake Reservation in Northern Minnesota after a neighbor called suspecting a stray dog lived on the property. What they found was heartbreaking — a sweet Chow Chow mix sat there scared and lonely. Despite being afraid, she was overjoyed to see a friendly face after being on her own for far too long.

After a long ride, Esmeralda arrived at Animal Humane Society. The first thing our staff noticed was that she walked with a limp, protecting her back leg. Our veterinarians soon discovered she was suffering severe trauma after being hit by a car. Without treatment for this injury, her back hip had not healed correctly. We couldn’t bear to see the pain in her eyes so we rushed her into surgery.

Esmeralda needed special attention after her surgery so we placed her with a wonderful foster family to give her time to heal. This cheerful pup was so excited to be able to use all of her legs after surgery; we needed an exceptional family to make sure she received the therapy she needed and could heal properly.

After more than two months in foster care, Esmeralda was healthy and ready to be adopted. Shortly after coming back to Animal Humane Society she was adopted and joined a family full of love and two other canine friends to play with! Esmeralda will never be lonely again.

Esmeralda’s story didn’t have a happy beginning, but because of generous support from our community, we were able to transform her life. Through your kindness, we will continue to respond with compassion and exceptional care for every animal in need. Together we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of animals in our community.

During this season of giving, please make a gift to continue supporting life-saving services for animals in our community.

A special thank you to our supporters

Each and every day at Animal Humane Society, there are countless moments of kindness to animals made possible through our donors’ support. Without that generosity we wouldn’t be able to help thousands of animals each year and we want to show our supporters how they are making a difference in the lives of animals in our care.

We’ve created a series of videos to thank individual donors and show them just a few of the things their donations allow us to do — whether it’s providing a bonded pair of rabbits some carrots to nibble or giving an energetic dog an extra walk. If you want to see how your support can (and does!) make a difference, please visit us online.

New website features make searching for animals easier!

Animal Humane Society’s website is often the place people first spot their future pet before coming in to visit and adopt. Knowing that our website is a powerful tool in getting animals adopted, we recently made some changes to make it even easier for potential adopters to find the right pet for them.

Changes include options to view animals that have a known history of living with children, cats or dogs, and whether or not a cat is declawed. There is a new option to search for pets over the age of 9, and the breed filter now only displays those currently in our care making it easier to find a specific breed. We’ve also made it easier to locate “forget-me-nots,” those animals that have been waiting an especially long time for a home. We hope you find these changes useful when searching for your next furry family member!

Kindest Cut reaches our globally

Kindest Cut Veterinarian Dr. Meghann Kruck and Technicians Alysha Coleman and Andrea Burgeson traveled to Grenada to provide veterinary care to animals in need on the island. The 10-day trip, organized and funded by GrenVet Island Veterinary Services, included four days of surgery on two Caribbean islands, Grenada and Carriacou.

They began at the Belmont Estate, a 100-acre organic farm and Grenada’s largest producer of cocoa. The team set up a makeshift clinic in a covered outdoor space. Luckily they were already accustomed to doing surgery in small spaces on the Kindest Cut mobile unit, so they were able to make the space functional for surgery. During the three-day clinic at the Belmont Estate, the team provided care for 85 animals including 36 spay/neuter surgeries and much-needed vaccinations, deworming and flea treatments.

The second part of the trip was spent on the neighboring island of Carriacou, a two-hour ferry ride from Grenada. Here they participated in another spay/neuter clinic, teaming up with a local animal welfare organization called WE CARE. They set up for surgery in a covered tennis court in the city center, and special effort went into making sure they had enough electricity which can often be a tricky feat in Grenada. During the one-day clinic in Carriacou they provided vaccinations, flea and deworming treatments and spay/neuter surgeries for an additional 14 dogs and cats.

There is only one veterinarian on the island of Grenada so veterinary care is scarce and often too expensive for residents to afford. Pet owners were not required to pay anything for the Kindest Cut services, but donations were accepted. According to Dr. Kruck, “many people on the island who have very little money were making donations for the care of future patients – it was absolutely inspiring.”

The response to Kindest Cut’s visit was overwhelming — they saw a total of 99 patients and performed 50 spay/neuter surgeries. They performed check-ups on several species including sheep, a ram, two cows, four monkeys, and two parrots and provided a number of additional surgical services including mass removals and a knee surgery.

Despite Kindest Cut’s efforts to fit in as many animals as possible, there are many more pets in need of spay/neuter surgeries. Fortunately several pet owners were able to book appointments for GrenVet’s next spay/neuter clinic in February, at which two more Kindest Cut staff members will be volunteering. The team hopes to continue to make quarterly trips back to the island to help.

“This experience reminded us of how truly blessed we and our animals in the US are,” says Dr. Kruck. “The animals in poor shape we’ve seen here in Minnesota don’t even compare to the average dog or cat in Grenada. It truly is a different world. With the help of GrenVet our hope is that we can improve the lives of the animals on the island.”

Animal House now offers individual playtime

Does your furry friend crave daily play sessions or quiet cuddle time?
