Captain Jacks says, "Aye! It's Adopt a Guinea Pig Month"

March 6, 2009

Watch Captain Jack, the guinea pig, on WCCO's Pet of the Week segment.

Pigs are in the month of March
Those furry little creatures that make great first pets for older kids are being celebrated throughout March at Animal Humane Society (AHS) in celebration of Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month.

It’s fitting that kids enjoy their guinea pig friends as many squeak in delight when their human(s) visits or opens their food container. They’re docile, yet social creatures requiring daily attention and an unlimited amount of green grass hay.

Fun facts

  • Guinea pigs weigh only a few pounds and are larger than hamsters, but smaller than rabbits.
  • They’re born with their eyes open and a full fur coat; their average life span is five to eight years.
  • There are 12 recognized breeds of guinea pigs.
  • Most love to hide when they play, that’s while you’ll see igloos in their cage.
  • You can train a guinea pig to use a litter box.

Guinea pigs are one of 10 types of animals available for adoption at AHS. In addition to dogs, cats and guinea pigs you’ll find birds, rats, mice, ferrets, bunnies, hamsters, chinchillas and gerbils. AHS averages a total of 30 guinea pig adoptions each month out of their five metro locations.
