72 small dogs rescued by AHS

Update on Aitkin rescue dogs as of March 28, 2011

In mid-December, 72 dogs and puppies were taken from the home of a couple in Aitkin, Minn. where the animals lived in overcrowded conditions. Many of the dogs were small breeds including miniature poodles, miniature pinschers, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, dachshunds and shelties.

Animal Humane Society humane agents received a complaint and were called to assist the Aitkin Sheriff’s Office when it was discovered that many animals were living in cramped kennels in foul conditions. The couple voluntarily surrendered the dogs to Animal Humane Society for care and placement into new homes.

Forty-nine of the dogs were adopted into new homes and 14 were transferred to Animal Humane Society rescue partners. Unfortunately, eight were euthanized for severe health and behavior issues and one died in the shelter.
