Foster Volunteer

Do you have a little extra time on your hands? Is there a bit of empty space in your home? Can you find some extra room in your heart?

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, consider becoming a foster volunteer for the Animal Humane Society.

Foster volunteers provide temporary loving homes for animals that are not yet ready for adoption. There are many types of animals that need foster such as…

  • Adult cats and dogs with litters
  • Young orphaned kittens and puppies
  • Cats, dogs and rabbits recovering from surgery
  • Animals with special health needs
  • Small mammals that may be pregnant
  • Animals that need extra socialization
  • Adult cats needing homes during kitten season
  • As well as many more individual needs

Foster homes provide the invaluable service of providing individualized care and socialization for animals in need. Foster volunteers can choose to specialize in care for particular animals such as orphaned kittens and puppies or nursing moms. The length of time an animal needs foster care greatly depends on the needs of the individual, but can range anywhere from 1 week to 3 months.

The Animal Humane Society provides all the supplies needed for fostering such as food, litter boxes, toys, food/water bowls, leashes and travel kennels. Before being sent to foster each animal receives vaccinations and is tested for both internal and external parasites. Cats are also tested for feline leukemia and dogs over 6 months are screened for heartworm. Each animal also receives a precautionary wormer and preventative flea and ear mite treatments. We also microchip all of our cats, dogs, rabbits and ferrets.
