About Us

Who We Are
Our Purpose

We are dedicated to creating a more humane world for animals by promoting the responsible treatment of animals and by enriching the relationship between animals and people that enhances human lives immeasurably.

Our Description

The newly merged humane society is the largest animal welfare organization in Minnesota. Supported solely by donations and fees, we are a private, nonprofit organization with full-service facilities, a statewide presence and a national voice.
Charities Review Seal   We have been awarded the Charities Review Council "Meets All Standards" seal, indicating that we meet all sixteen of its Accountability Standards in four critical areas: Public Disclosure, Governance, Financial Activity, and Fundraising.

What We Do
Our Strategy

It is our job and our passion to help animals. To do so effectively and responsibly, we work with people -engaging the minds, hearts and hands of devoted volunteers and donors, talented staff, and strategic partners.
Together we serve the immediate and lifelong needs of animals, their human companions and the communities in which they live. We enhance the relationship between animals and humans through numerous services and products in three primary areas:

1. Animal protection

  • Rescue
  • Investigation
  • Legislation
2. Direct care
  • Sheltering
  • Vet services
  • Adoption and placement
3. Social engagement
  • Education
  • Community outreach
  • Partnerships
Every day we are humbled by the moral duty and dilemmas faced in the protection and care of animals. Yet we are commited to using responsible legal, social and economic means to reduce animal suffering, reduce animal abandonment and reduce animal overpopulation.
The newly merged humane society is an active force in the alleviation of animal overpopulation. Every animal adopted through our facilities is spayed or neutered -approximately 20,000 a year. In addition, every dog, cat, rabbit and ferret that leaves our doors as an adopted pet is microchipped, vaccinated, and evaluated for temperament and health conditions.

Who We Were
About the Animal Humane Society

Founded in 1891, the original 19th century organization was established to protect children and animals -especially the city's draft horses -those who could not advocate for themselves. For fourty years, the organization's home was the Florence Barton Loring Shelter, which was remodeled several times. In the mid 1960's the organization built a new shelter and adopted the name Animal Humane Society (AHS). AHS had a variety of names over the century: Minneapolis Humane Society, Animal Rescue League, and Animal Humane Society of Hennipin County.

About the Humane Society for Companion Animals

Founded in 1878, the Humane Society for Companion Animals (HSCA) was the oldest sheltered animal protection agency in Minnesota, committed to saving animal lives and providing services for the animals and people of our community. HSCA cared for nearly 9,000 animals each year between two shelters in St. Paul and Woodbury.

About the Greater West Metro Humane Society

GWMHS began as the Humane Society of Wright County in 1980 when a group of caring individuals joined together to provide foster homes for homeless animals. Those foster homes grew into a permanent shelter that opened in 2003.

How We Serve

With a paid staff of 222 full and part- time employees including four full time veterinarians as well as more than 1,000 volunteers, the newly merged humane society is able to offer some of the country’s most comprehensive humane services. All five of our sites in Golden Valley, Coon Rapids, Buffalo, St. Paul, and Woodbuty are open admission facilities -no animal is turned away- and we make every effort to bring people and pets together. We do this by providing community and classroom education, pet training classes, pet behavior help lines, therapy animal training and lost and found services.
