AHS team helps pets displaced by tornado

In the aftermath of the May 22 tornado in Joplin, thousands of pets found themselves separated from their families. More than 1200 of those animals ended up at a temporary shelter set up by the Joplin Humane Society and the ASPCA. Volunteers from across the country have been caring for the animals while they wait to be reclaimed by their owners or adopted into new families.

When the ASPCA put out a call for volunteers to help pets displaced by the tornado, Animal Humane Society promptly responded. A team of six from AHS recently spent a week in Joplin caring for nearly 800 animals — cleaning cages, feeding and exercising the animals, providing comfort and affection, and reuniting pets with their owners whose lives have been turned upside down by the tornado.

“It’s amazing how a town can be completely destroyed, yet the people are so resilient and grateful,” says Jenney Miller, customer service supervisor at Animal Humane Society. “I can’t even imagine what the people and animals of Joplin have been through. It was such a rewarding experience and I’ll never forget the names and stories of the individual people and animals I was able to help.”

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of pets have been reunited with their families. But as the team headed back to Minnesota, hundreds more remained in the temporary shelter. This past weekend the Joplin Humane Society and the ASPCA held an adoption event to help find new homes for the unclaimed animals. In just two days, 745 pets were adopted by incredible people from both near and far! Now, only a few animals affected by the disaster are in need of new homes, and the Joplin Humane Society continues to work to make that happen.

Madeleine the burglar-nabbing cat

“I adopted Madeleine and Ollie from Animal Humane Society in 2007 and since then, they've enriched my life in more ways than I can count. Since adopting them I've switched careers, boyfriends and cities (I moved to New York in late 2007), but they have always been the constant in my life.
 
A few weeks ago, we were sound asleep when Madeleine started crawling all over our faces. "Come on, girl kitty!" we told her, but she started vocalizing incessantly and walking all over the bed. She even woke up our 14-pound Chihuahua mix, Louis, who is completely deaf and was slumbering peacefully on the bed with us.

Finally, we turned on the light, just in time to catch a burglar trying to break in to our apartment through the bedroom window! Between our threats to call the police and Louis’ "ferocious" barking, the burglar scrambled away in a hurry.

We’ve always referred to Madeleine as the “World's Smartest Cat,” and this event proved us right. Thank you for giving my kitties a second chance at finding a home. I can't imagine a better fit for them than with me and vice versa.
 
When I was growing up, my family always adopted dogs from Animal Humane Society, including Bill, a Coonhound adopted in 1995, and Rose, a Rottie mix adopted a few years later — both of whom have slowed down a lot but are still living it up in Plymouth with my parents. AHS stepping out at summer festivals

Animal Humane Society is spreading the word about our programs and services by setting up booths and meeting with animal lovers at a number of community events this summer, and even stepping out in a few parades!

We are excited to be able to share all the things we love about Animal Humane Society, hear adoption success stories from the public, and to learn more about you! From adoption to volunteering, youth programs to dog training, our staff and volunteers will have all the information you need on hand — and a few giveaways too!

Animal Humane Society staff, volunteers and their pets are also appearing in several parades with Kindest Cut, a new high quality, low-cost spay/neuter service for pets of people in need. Animal Humane Society recently partnered with private-practice Veterinarian Dr. Meghann Kruck to provide this service to local communities and together will be parading the Kindest Cut mobile surgical truck down avenues this summer.

Music in the Zoo CD benefits AHS

Want to get your paws on some exclusive tunes and help out animals? The seventh volume of Music in the Zoo: Please Don’t Feed the Musicians is now available. This album is a compilation of live recordings from the 2010 Music in the Zoo Concert Series. This year, proceeds from the CD benefit the Animal Humane Society! Detour to AHS St. Paul shelter this weekend

This coming weekend July 2 -32 customers will need to take an alterantive route to our St. 2 customers customers will need to take an alternative route to our St. Paul location due to the Hmong Sports Festival at McMurray Fields. There will be no access to the shelter on Como Ave. or Jessamine Ave. from Lexington Pkwy. Instead, customers will need to take Hamline Ave. south to Jessamine Ave. and inform Police that they are going to Animal Humane Society. Customers coming from the east can access Hamline Ave. from Horton Ave. while those coming from the west can take Como Ave. There will be a designated area for Animal Humane Society parking at the corner of Jessamine Ave. and Beulah Ln.
