Adoption process

Each year, Animal Humane Society helps thousands of animals in need find loving homes. Our adoption staff will work with you to find the right dog, cat, or critter for your home. Here’s how the process works:

Step 1: Explore the animals currently available for adoption.

Our online adoption listings are updated live throughout the day as animals are adopted or become available.

We use an application and interview process to ensure that each animal adopted will be matched to the most compatible new owner. To expedite the adoption process, you can complete the form before you visit.

Special ProjectsSpecial projects

These are animals that have come to us due to some extraordinary circumstances. For example, animals that came to us as a result of an animal cruelty case or humane investigation. It likely was living in unsanitary conditions and lacked appropriate socialization and health care. These animals may also be those rescued from weather-related situations, such as a hurricane or flood.

Preparing to adopt

Preparing to adopt

Please consider these factors before adopting a pet:

Landlord approval

If you lease your home, check with your landlord before adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a pet and can afford all required pet deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of lease restrictions and/or landlord’s disapproval of the pet chosen. This can be an expensive lesson since the adoption fees are non-refundable and being returned to the shelter can be a stressful experience for the animal.

Why we charge an adoption fee

Animal Humane Society is a private, nonprofit organization that relies completely on private donations and its own fundraising abilities to operate. We receive no federal, state or government funding or any funds from any national animal welfare organizations.

The fees collected from the adoption of each animal help to offset some of the costs involved in providing care for the animals and preparing an animal for placement into a new home.
