Peeeek!

Dear Visitors and Potential Adopters:

The Animal Humane Society receives animals from the public in a variety of ways.

This particular dog came to us as a result of a situation in Fillmore County, Minnesota where multiple animals were living together in less than ideal conditions. The potential exists for this dog to provide many years of valued companionship to an adopter, however, due to his/her past experiences and environment, additional challenges may present themselves. Please consider carefully the following points if you are considering adopting this dog:

House training – Since this animal has spent most of his/her time outside where he/she was allowed to urinate and defecate anywhere, adopters must expect they will have to start house training from square one. Even with ideal conditions, this animal may be a challenge to completely house train. Set your expectations accordingly. Be patient and realistic. Be prepared for the possibility that this pet may never be completely reliable.

Socialization – Because these animals were not living in a normal home environment, they may be lacking social skills and manners. In your home, many things will be new to them and it’s important to be patient and offer new experiences in a gradual, positive manner. As most experienced pet owners know, it is critical for young animals to have many positive, new experiences in their young lives to grow up to be well-adjusted pets. These animals may have not had the benefit of early socialization.

Health –While the Society has made every effort to evaluate the health and temperament of these animals, please understand that we can make no guarantees on their health or behavior in the long-term. Please see adoption staff in regards to medical findings. Please consult with your veterinarian to develop health care plan for your new pet.

If you are interested in adopting one of these animals, please consult with one of our adoption staff.
