Dear Visitors and Potential Adopters:

This dog came to the Animal Humane Society as a result of a neglect situation in Anoka County where multiple animals were living in highly unsanitary conditions. As this dog may present some additional challenges to a pet owner, please consider carefully the following points before making a decision to adopt:

Housetraining

Since this dog has spent most of his time living indoors where he was allowed to urinate and defecate anywhere, adopters must expect they will have to start housetraining from square one. Even with ideal conditions, this dog may be a challenge to completely house train. Set your expectations accordingly. Be patient and realistic. Be prepared for the possibility that this dog may never be completely reliable.

Socialization

Because these adult dogs were not living in a normal home environment, they may be lacking social skills and manners. In previous cases such as this, we experienced dogs that were bonded to other dogs and not to people. In your home, many things will be new to them and it’s important to be patient and offer new experiences in a gradual, positive manner. As most experienced dog owners know, it is critical for young puppies to have many positive, new experiences in their young lives to grow up to be well-adjusted pets. These dogs may not have had the benefit of early socialization and, therefore, we highly recommend enrolling in a training or socialization class.

Health

While the Animal Humane Society has made every effort to evaluate the health and temperament of these animals, please understand that we can make no guarantees on their health or behavior in the long term. Please see adoption staff in regard to medical findings. Please consult with your veterinarian to develop a health care plan for your new pet.

If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs or puppies, please consult with one of our adoption staff.
