How adoption works

Each year, Animal Humane Society helps thousands of animals find loving homes. Our adoption staff will work with you to find the right dog, cat, or critter for your home. Here’s how the process works:

Step 1: Explore the animals currently available for adoption.

Our online adoption listings are updated live throughout the day as animals are adopted or become available.

Step 2: Visit one of our adoption centers to meet potential pets.

Once you have found an animal that you are interested in adopting, contact a volunteer or staff member about visiting with the pet. To ensure the pet is compatible with everyone, all household/family members should interact with the animal before the adoption is finalized. If you are interested in adopting one of our Hidden Gems, call to schedule a visit.

Step 3: Complete an adoption interview.

We use an interview process to ensure that each animal adopted will be matched to the most compatible new owner. During this process we will review any medical or behavioral information relevant to that animal, explain policies and services available to adopters, and collect adoption fees. Our knowledgeable customer service staff will also help you select the right supplies for your new pet from the wide variety of products available for purchase at our adoption centers. There is no application form to complete before you visit.

Step 4: Welcome your new family member home.

Animal Humane Society is committed to providing services for all stages of a pet’s life. We offer a free behavior helpline, an on-line behavior library, pet training and playgroups, pet boarding, pet supplies and events for you and your pet. Our website also has many resources to help pet owners including microchipping, spay/neuter, pet friendly housing and a lost pet bulletin board.
