How adoption works

Each year, Animal Humane Society helps thousands of animals find loving homes. Our adoption staff will work with you to find the right dog, cat, or critter for your home. Here’s how the process works:

Step 1: Explore the animals currently available for adoption.

Our online adoption listings are updated live throughout the day as animals are adopted or become available.

Step 2: Visit one of our adoption centers to meet potential pets.

Once you have found an animal that you are interested in adopting, contact a volunteer or staff member about visiting with the pet. To ensure the pet is compatible with everyone, all household/family members should interact with the animal before the adoption is finalized. If you are interested in adopting one of our Hidden Gems, call to schedule a visit.

Step 3: Complete an adoption application and interview.

To begin the adoption process, you must agree to our adoption policies and complete an adoption application form. The adoption application outlines key adoption policies for your review and it provides helpful information about you and your household for our staff to review and discuss prior to finalizing your selection. We will also review with you any medical or behavioral information relevant to that animal, explain policies and services available to adopters, and collect adoption fees.

Plan to allow one to two hours to complete the adoption process. To save time, complete the application form before you visit.

Step 4: Welcome your new family member home.

Animal Humane Society is committed to providing services for all stages of a pet’s life. We offer a free behavior helpline, an on-line behavior library, pet training and playgroups, pet boarding, pet supplies and events for you and your pet. Our website also has many resources to help pet owners including microchipping, spay/neuter, pet friendly housing and a lost pet bulletin board.
