Since three animal welfare organizations merged in 2007 to form the Animal Humane Society, AHS has consistently strived to help more animals in need. As we continue moving forward, we’re implementing several new initiatives that will provide more second chances to homeless and neglected animals.
Bound for Home is a multi-year organizational effort to move animals through our facilities more quickly to placeable and adoptable situations, to ensure the health and well-being of animals while they are in our facilities, and to reduce the rates of euthanasia at our five campuses.
Staff from all areas of the organization have participated in surveys, roundtable discussions and examinations of best practices at other animal welfare organizations throughout the country that have seen success with similar programs. Committees have reviewed our canine and feline protocols in regard to intake, medical treatments and euthanasia protocols.
We have also undergone an external review of our procedures to gain outside perspective and guidance. We secured the services of shelter medicine experts Veterinarians Dr. Sandra Newbury and Dr. Jyothi Robertson from the Shelter Medicine Team at the University of California-Davis to conduct a formal assessment of our programs and facilities.
Work has begun to implement the various aspects of Bound for Home. Check this site often as we communicate more about the initiative and how it will improve our capacity for care at Animal Humane Society.
