Bound for Home Initiative

Since three animal welfare organizations merged in 2007 to form the Animal Humane Society, AHS has consistently strived to help more animals in need. As we continue moving forward, we’re implementing several new initiatives that will provide more second chances to homeless and neglected animals. Earlier this year we launched the Bound for Home Initiative, an AHS multi-year organizational effort to move animals through our facilities more quickly to placeable and adoptable situations, to ensure the health and well-being of animals while they are in our facilities, and to reduce the rates of euthanasia at our five campuses.

Staff from all areas of the organization have participated in surveys, roundtable discussions and examinations of best practices at other animal welfare organizations throughout the country. Committees have been established that are reviewing our canine and feline protocols in regard to intake, medical treatments and euthanasia protocols. In addition, we are undergoing an external review of our procedures to gain outside perspective and guidance. We secured the services of Veterinarians Dr. Sandra Newbury and Dr. Jyothi Robertson from the Shelter Medicine Team at the University of California-Davis to conduct a formal assessment of our programs and facilities. Experts in medicine at animal shelters throughout the country, they were on-site in June visiting AHS’s five campuses.
